Mr. Gunajit Nath, a dedicated organic farmer, has been cultivating kharif scented rice
using traditional, chemical-free methods. He initially started with local rice varieties such as
Kunkuni Joha and Bogi Joha, followed by rapeseed cultivation in the rabi season.
Recognizing the potential of organic farming, he sought expert guidance and enrolled in
organic rice cultivation training at KVK Barpeta.
Technology infused, implementation and results:
During this time, KVK Barpeta launched an organic farming project in Anandapur and
Kharadhara villages, which aimed to promote sustainable agricultural practices. Mr. Nath
actively participated in this initiative and attended skill development training on organic
inputs, where he learned about vermicompost preparation, azolla rearing, and biofertilizer
application. These techniques helped him improve soil fertility, reduce dependency on
chemical fertilinrs, and enhance the overall productivity of his farm.
With KVK’s technical guidance and support, Mr. Nath expanded his organic rice
cultivation to premium Joha rice varieties, including Tulsi Joha, Keteki Joha, and Bakul
Joha. These scented rice varieties are highly sought after for their unique aroma and quality,
adding significant value to his farming business. By adopting organic methods, he has not
only ensured sustainable soil health but has also contributed to environmental
conservation and healthier food production.
